"God said man needs doctors"?

If there is God, why do we need doctors?
If it is God who controls our health, if it is he who decides when we should fall ill, and when we should survive and when we die, do we have the ability to over-ride his decision?? why should we waste time in going to a doctor when things have already been decided?

Being a doctor myself, and after knowing most of the things about how the human body works , i definitely feel there is something wrong in the concept of a God that controls human health. That this God decides when and how we fall ill or die, is difficult for me to understand, because from what we see, it doesn't seem to be so.

The commonest answer from most of my theist friends is that, God has said that man needs doctors ( i guess there is some verse somewhere in those books which says so. somebody please help me to find out what it exactly says... is the word 'doctor' or equivalent used in there?, or is it just 'another wise man' or something).

When you fall ill, you never accept it as God's curse do you? you desperately want to get well soon. The God-believing believer would pray to God for his mercy because they know only God can put them back on track again. 'smart' believers wouldn't take their chances and would also go to the doctor at the same time. They believe that medical treatment is necessary, but for it to be effective they should have God's mercy upon them.

And where did the doctors come from?
Did God drop them onto earth from heaven?
A doctor is just a human being, professionally trained to detect and cure human diseases. For this he uses wide knowledge of human diseases that he has acquired from records of human disease over the past, combined with his direct experience with various human diseases over the years. Combining this with skill and intelligence, a doctor is able to relate a particular disease to a patient he has seen in the past, and make a similar or modified attempt at curing the particular disease.
Medical knowledge is not something gained by birth, or by gift. It is only attained by constant learning. And hence doctors are not Gods gifts. And medical science is taught by God, neither does he help us in any way to improve our current knowledge.

and we happen to call upon God in cases of severe illnesses.
And what do you think? Does God help the ones who pray , and betray the ones who don’t ? Don’t you think praying and worshipping is very unreliable? People don’t try to think otherwise because they also accept the result whether good or bad as 'God's FINAL decision'.
The great prayer experiment ( refer one of my earlier posts) has proven scientifically that prayers have no effect on disease process not even psychological!

and what do you think?
Who discovered the secrets of the human body, causes of disease, microbes, genes, ?
Who coined the word doctor?
Who formulated the degree called MBBS?
Who made drugs to cure disease? vaccines for prevention?
Who found out the importance of hygiene?
Who found antiseptics, antibiotics,??
ITS MAN himself!! nobody else.
Man has been struggling against his natural course to death, to live for longer, to fight against nature's law of survival of the fittest. Man helps his 'not so fit' fellow beings to survive.

and God does nothing.!

And you might want to say God planned them all.
That he knew Leeuwenhoek would find the microbe and Edward Jenner would find the vaccine and Fleming would find penicillin and all.
And, IF he knew…. and he set them up all by himself…,
Then he also knew that Charles Darwin would find out the theory of evolution... !

Your Idea of God and his creation contradicts itself everywhere. and you desperately take it up as your duty to defend his existence by making your own reasons, don't you?
But for what?
Isn't it time to think about it yourself?

  1. The Bible does not mention doctor/physician but it does mention the healer. True God never walks visible corridors. Whatever be the field of study, each of us boils down to the category of human beings. What explains the concept of mercy killing? What makes doctors inspite of their medical knowledge helplessly watch those who hibernate in coma? And does not the bible clarify that “For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.”(1 Corinthians 12:4). Now who discovered Charles Darwin?

  2. sometimes, some things get damaged beyond repair. like a broken mirror can never be a perfect mirror again.
similar is the case of coma and such end stage illnesses. when damage happens beyond the 'point of no return' , you can't help it.
